Local Honey – A Sweet Hay Fever Cure

Summer has arrived, and, unfortunately, so has the dreaded hay fever. For many, this is a bittersweet time of year, when sunsets are blurred by smeary eyes, and the dewy scent of warm evenings is marred by the incessant lingering of pollen. (Oh and then there’s the fact that sneezing becomes a regular and unwelcome response in conversations.)

So what can you do to combat hay fever and all its unsavoury side-effects? Of course there’s a colourful array of white pills available over-the-counter; some non-drowsy, some so drowsy you’ll consider snorting neat pollen just to wake yourself up. But if you don’t fancy rattling around this summer then you might prefer to explore a more holistic solution.

If you’re looking for a natural hay fever cure then talk to your local bees.

The idea that local honey helps to tackle hay fever is an elusive one – often being considered an old wives tale, or merely a romantic notion. However, there’s enough evidence to suggest that there’s some truth in this remedy (even if it doesn’t necessarily work for everybody).

The theory is founded on the concept of desensitisation. While bees only collect heavy-grain pollen that doesn’t cause hay fever, it’s likely that the stickiness of the honey also collects a certain amount of the offending lighter and wind-blown pollen (which typically stems from grass and trees such as birch). By consuming this honey, and being exposed to a small dose of the wicked pollen, the theory goes that you’ll build up immunity and experience lesser hay fever symptoms. Simple.

Unfortunately many people continue to suffer the grotty effects of allergies, despite their efforts. If you’re in this boat and you find yourself reaching for the strong stuff, then it’s worth remembering that honey has medicinal properties that can, at the very least, relieve the side-effects of hay fever. Studies have found that as an antibacterial and healing agent, honey is a more effective solution than over-the-counter relief for colds and sore throats.

And if you’re still not sold, then it’s worth stocking up on local honey simply for its taste alone.

Cornish bees, we salute you!
